For your Journal Commander project, there are many different factors that you need to consider. When planning your project, having vague details and goals will soon become stumbling blocks during your journal migration. Therefore, it is imperative that clear, detailed objectives are laid out from the start so your project can flow smoother and quicker, with less probability for errors.

For example, you need to consider:

  • The location of the data – where are you migrating your journals from and to? What is your source and target?
  • Type of data being migrated – are you just journal archives? Do you need to consider Journal Splitting or a Journal Transformation?
  • Data filtered – Are you moving all data in your environment? Do you have a specific timescale? Are you moving currently active users or are you including leavers? Are you moving only data relating to legal compliance?
  • Atypical requests – these requests are usually unique to your environment and needs i.e. your migration may only run at certain times of the day, or perhaps you are located in multiple geographical locations.
  • Monitoring, managing and reporting – who is responsible for your project, how often will the migration need to be monitored, and what is the protocol if unexpected errors arise? What information needs to be communicated to users?

Consider drawing out a thorough and comprehensive timeline for your project, including if the migration will interfere with your regular business operations or result in any unnecessary downtime. Include your desired timescale for your project.

Finely scoping your Journal Commander project is crucial in order to avoid increases in costs, time and surplus data being added to your migration.
