Overview

There are two reports in Radar Reporting that are reporting data about mail traffic:

  • Internal vs External
  • Mail Traffic Overview

At first glance, the difference between these reports is not obvious. This explains the differences between these reports.

Details

The Internal vs External report is based on Get-MessageTrace data. It is based on every single message that has a successful delivery status and it does not include spam.

The Mail Traffic Overview is based on Get-MailTraffic data from Microsoft, which they pre-calculate. The problem is that Microsoft doesn’t really share information about how they calculate the data. They don’t describe how they determine what is “good” or “spam”. If it is just the spam in Exchange filters or if it does count the inbox stuff too?

Internal vs External:

  • Internal Mail – This includes all email traffic from the tenant domain to the tenant domain.
  • External Mail – This includes all email traffic either received from or targeted to a domain that’s different than the tenant domain.

Mail traffic overview:

  • Inbound Good Mail – This includes all “good” emails received from the tenant domain mailboxes and also from other email domains.
  • Outbound Good Mail – This includes all “good” emails sent to mailboxes within the tenant, but also outside your tenant domain.
  • Inbound Spam & Malware – This includes all “spam & malware” emails received from tenant domain mailboxes and also from other email domains.
  • Outbound Spam & Malware – This includes all “spam & malware” emails sent to mailboxes within the tenant, but also outside your tenant domain.
