This article explains how to create and configure storage for PST Flight Deck in Microsoft Azure.

Create The Storage in Azure

  1. In the Azure portal click New | Data + Storage | Storage account.
  2. In “Create Storage Account” provide a name for the storage.
  3. Choose “Resource Manager” for the Deployment model.
  4. For Account kind select “Blob Storage”
  5. Performance will be “Standard”.
  6. Use “Locally-redundant storage” for the replication type
  7. Access tier can be Cool
  8. Add it to a subscription
  9. Create a new or use an existing resource group
  10. Select the proper location.
  11. Click “Create”
  12. Storage will take a moment to provision. Once it has provisioned find it in “All Resources” and select it.
  13. Go to Settings | Access Keys. Click the … next to key1 and select “View Connection String”.
  14. A “View Connection String” box will appear. Select the connection string and copy it to the clipboard.  It will begin with “DefaultEndpointsProtocol”


Add The Connection String To The Backup Module

  1. In FD/MMPST go to Settings | Module Editor | and select the Backup tab.
  2. In the Backup Location select Cloud. In the Storage connection string paste in the copied connection string.  Then click Apply in the ribbon.
  3. Open services.msc and restart the backup service to complete the configuration.



  1. Download the “Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer” tool from Microsoft. At the time of writing it can be found here.
  2. Once installed, connect to the storage in the Azure Storage Explorer by using the connection string. Click on Connect.
  3. Paste in the connection string and click Next and then Connect.
  4. You should now see the storage in the explorer.
  5. Have FD/MMPST process a file with the backup module. It will then create a storage container and place the file(s) in that container.
  6. After the file has successfully been processed by the backup module, refresh the storage in the Azure Storage Explorer. Under “Blob Containers you should see the container that the module created and the PST file(s) that have been backed up to blob storage.
